GRACE ORESMAN

Ethereal Illuminance

The duality of light in the dark, glamour amidst nature, and fantasy within reality are the major themes found in this project.

Let’s take a journey into a dreamlike state; to feel the wondrous energy that comes from how light, beauty, and our atmosphere interact with each other.

This project is a combination of my passion for portraiture and my deep intrigue in night photography. This past year, I’ve fallen in love with capturing the stars and mastering the techniques it takes to photograph under the moon. Portraiture has been a part of my life ever since I can remember, so I was inspired to blend these two ideas together to make a unique love child of my favorite things.

Using a specialized set of tinted tubes, I put a flashlight at one end to create a light painting tool that is evident in each of my photographs.

When I was taking each image, I began by shooting a long exposure of my scene, an additional long exposure to paint the patterns of light with the tubes, and then a final exposure using off-camera strobe lights to light my models.

The entire process was done manually and simultaneously; each shot was done by hand, all in one setting. The final products were created by combining each aspect of the image into one photo during post-processing.

This project was a way for me to experiment with the depths of my fantasies; the lucid interpretation of how I depict this world.

Ethereal Illuminance was created to celebrate the concept of light affecting everything around us, and how beautiful it can be.
