In my final capstone project, I explored the aesthetic allure of the Y2K era through fashion and the lens of monochromatic photography. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant and eclectic visual culture of the late 1990s and early 2000s, my work represents this era that has come back in today's fashion style. I have titled this project ‘Y2K Monochrome’.
Throughout my project, I experimented with various colors and props for each model. All models are dressed in some form of Y2K clothing as well as props or poses. To tie monochrome to my project, you will see how each model has a contrasting color background opposing their outfit color. I wanted to also capture both female and male Y2K aesthetics to add diversity to my project.
Instead of doing the traditional monochromatic look, I wanted to add a fun creative twist to it. We have seen images of photographers photographing models with one cohesive color or with contrasting colors. Instead of following the norm, I decided to use Y2K as my style. This aesthetic has become very popular in recent years and continues to do so. Another reason why I decided on this aesthetic is because a lot of the work that I see that I want to do is inspired by this era. It also gave me a lot of room to be creative as well.
Ultimately, my aim with this project is to show the direction I want my career to go in which is to become a fashion photographer. One personal goal I had before starting this project was to push myself. I needed to get out of my comfort zone. How I achieved this, is by shooting the entirety of this project in the studio and capturing both genders. I am proud of my capstone, and I hope you are too. Also, wanted to say thank you to every model that participated in my work.
