In the words of Margaret Atwood: “A word after a word after a word is power” and in the words of Frederick R. Barnard: “A picture tells a thousand words.” By combining these two phenomena one picture could hold a strength greater than anything before it. Multiple pictures in this style may even have the ability to make an audience feel something. What is the purpose of photography if not to evoke emotion from a viewer, whether it be yourself or someone else.
For my final project, my aim was to combine two of my favourite mediums: Literature and photography. The images are a depiction of a poem, written by myself, in the hopes of capturing the feelings and imagery throughout. The photos reflect the feelings of the words and allow viewers to experience the emotions of the poem in a new and dynamic way.
I chose to use black and white for my shoot as it allows the viewers to interpret the images in whatever way they feel, and it can bring an extra element of depth and dimension to the image through the imagination. I find that the absence of colour creates an entirely new perspective.
My work as a photographer reflects my love of, travel, people, and literature. Growing up in rural Wales, I have always been inspired by the dramatic landscapes which surround me. My love of photography began by trying to capture the stunning coastline where I lived. My photographs try to reflect the sheer majesty of nature and the ever-changing landscapes she creates.
