AnnaLycia Patrice

AnnaLycia Patrice is a portrait photographer from Hayward, California, who started at NAU as a journalism major. Photography has always been a part of their life, through clubs or hobbies, but they decided to pursue it as a career path after taking a photojournalism class in college. Their future in photography is yet to be determined, but they hope to live everyday to the absolute fullest, capturing the world’s beauty through their eyes.

Their capstone project is a portrait series heavily inspired by the Rider Waite tarot deck. Tarot cards are a way to divine answers from the universe and the practice is an underlying part of AnnaLycia’s spirituality. Their own interpretation of the original meanings are represented in the portraits, bringing out each models’ inner deity.

The Fool is for trusting what the universe has in store for you. Your foolishness and innocence does not matter since you are beginning your journey. The High Priestess is your inner voice and intuition bringing out your knowledge about the world; you just need to listen to yourself. The Empress represents your feminine energy and the five senses. By being aware of your surroundings you can find creativity and beauty around you. The Hanged Man means you need a new perspective. If you look at a situation differently then you will see the true message you are trying to receive from the world.

There are 78 cards in a complete deck, divided into the 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana. Each card tells a different part of one continuous story, and can be interpreted differently depending on the reader and the art. AnnaLycia hopes to one day finish this series when they have more time and resources, so others can see the power of tarot.
