What Lies in the Shadows
Horror: defined as an intense feeling of fear, shock or disgust. Horror brings out a different reaction in everyone. MP has been fascinated with horror and gore as long as she can remember. As a child, Halloween has been MP’s favorite holiday with the passion over the years growing to admire the creepy, terrifying side. Portrait photography has always been the area she preferred using because of the need to develop a relationship between her and the model. MP decided to combine these two passions together to create a horror styled portrait collection for her final college undergrad project.
What Lies in the Shadows is a series of horror styled portraits grasping further into the darkness to reveal the secrets that lurk in the unknown. The mention of horror affects everyone inversely, whether it is thrilling or bloody frightening or even a combination of emotions being evoked. She used a one light Profoto grid set up on a black backdrop in the studio, this setup creates the dramatic, dim lighting to compliment the spine-chilling concepts. All the models were instructed to characterize a particular appearance depending on their concept. To further the terrorizing concepts, additional props were included in the shoots, such as a fake heart and fake blood to create the settings for these images to come to life.
Each styled portrait has been created to set a frightening, dramatic, thrilling, and chilling mood. MP is inspired by gore related matters and the mindsets it puts others in. Everyone reacts differently to horror and she brought out those known feelings that horror provides people through this series of images. Follow MP and step deeper and deeper into the unknown looming in the darkness.
